Tuesday, October 24, 2006 PQS 04 Energy Saving, TP1, EnergyStar for Distribution Transformers and the Federal 2007 Legislation 8:30 am-9:30 am The energy conservation program for commercial and industrial equipment includes the electrical distribution network and more specifically, its transformers. US EPA estimates that 60 to 80 billion kilowatt hours annually are wasted by transformer losses or $3 to 4 billion dollars. With the right installation and transformer designs we could save as per DOE study, 1 to 1.5 billion a year by using properly designed energy efficient dry-type transformers. The new 2005 Canadian regulation, CSA C802.2 and US NEMA TP1 or EnergyStar efficiency are designed for linear loads only, and as such will loose those design efficiency’s under today’s modern non-linear loads (e.g. computers, ballast, drives) in existing building’s. Losses under non-linear loads can be as high as 2-3 times depending on the quantity of electronic loads
