PAC 23
Standardized Practices for Powering, Grounding and Protection of ITE and Telecommunications
9:00 am-5:00 pm

This tutorial presents guidance and insight on recommended practices for ITE and telecommunications as described in Chapter 9 of newly released IEEE Std. 1100-2006 Powering and Grounding Electronic Equipment. The greatly revised Chapter 9 (with several new Annexes) is the most comprehensive single-treatment compilation on this subject matter available to-date. These recommended practices are substantially harmonized with cross-industry codes, standards, practices, and methods - including international documents. The scope ranges from simple commercial spaces to large campus environments and includes modern data centers. Topics are addressed sequentially from the incoming service providers, to the building structure, to the power system(s) and down to the electronic equipment at the cabinet/rack/shelf and unit level. Topics include ac and dc powering; grounding & bonding; lightning and surge protection; equipment bonding network arrangements; communications links; customer-owned outside plant; and tower structures and related equipment. Recommendations are given for power interruption testing and site/equipment evaluation. Inter-related topics include service provider space (such as telephone or CATV company) collocations at the commercial building; vulnerability concerns versus equipment immunity; environmental electromagnetic exposure; electromagnetic compatibility; principals for establishing recommended practices; and general compliance. Twelve Annexes provide further recommendations (normative) or a broad range of supporting and explanatory discussion (informative).
