Wednesday, October 26 PQS 08 The Future Impact of Thermal And Compressed Air Storage (TACAS) Technology 8:30 am-9:30 am Active Power has developed a new energy-storage technology: Thermal And Compressed-Air Storage (TACAS). This technology was introduced and displayed at PowerSystems World 2004 in Chicago. TACAS Beta shipments began in Q4-04. Commercial shipments will begin in Q4-05. This paper will give a brief explanation of TACAS technology and the timetable for launching commercial TACAS products for the UPS marketplace. It will then compare TACAS to other storage technologies and explain the relative advantages of each. The paper will conclude with a look forward at applications other than 3-phase UPS systems. For example, Active Power has already achieved a 2-hour backup time at 10 kW, and is researching ways to package TACAS for telecom applications requiring up to 12 hours of backup time. In addition, electric utility customers have asked Active Power to develop a megawatt-scale version of TACAS for load-shifting applications.
